Compassion Focused Therapy
Whilst most people find it easy to feel and show compassion towards others, many describe feeling unable to turn compassion inwards. To this end there is somewhat of a double-standard, where individuals tend to judge themselves far more harshly than they would others. Critical or shaming relationships and experiences, in early and later life often serve to increase the double-standard gap.
The intention of compassion focused therapy is to help clients develop and work with experiences of inner warmth, safeness and soothing via self-compassion. This can help regulate mood and be useful in the treatment of many mental health problems where shame, self-criticism or self-hate feature.
